Some cats need time
You brought home a shiny new fountain, plugged it in, and your cat... walked away like it didn't exist.
Don't panic. Most cats need 3-14 days of adjustment before they'll drink from a fountain. Here's the proven protocol.
Week 1: Introduction phase
Setup:
- Place fountain in a low-traffic area of your kitchen (NOT next to litter box or food bowl — cats prefer separation)
- Keep the old water bowl at 30cm distance for comfort
- Rinse the new filter under cold water for 15 seconds before inserting (removes carbon dust)
Observation:
- Watch cat approach the fountain — most cats will circle it curiously
- Do NOT interact or try to "show" your cat the fountain. Cats hate being coached.
- Success signal: cat sniffs the fountain within 24 hours
If cat ignores it after 3 days:
- Move the old bowl 50cm further away (make fountain the closer option)
- Wet cat's paw with fountain water while grooming — they'll lick it off and associate the taste
- Try dropping a favorite treat near the fountain
Week 2: Transition phase
- Once cat has drunk from fountain once, remove the old bowl
- Refresh water every 3-4 days (even with filter, dust settles)
- Note baseline: how much water level drops per day
Week 3-4: Establishment phase
- Cat should be drinking daily from the fountain
- Water level drops by ~150-250ml/day (single cat) or 250-450ml/day (two cats)
- Replace filter at day 28 (mark calendar or subscribe to auto-ship)
Ongoing rhythm
- Daily: visual check that pump is running, water is topped up
- Weekly: full refill (drain, wipe reservoir with vinegar solution, refill)
- Monthly: new filter
- Quarterly: deep clean pump
What if my cat still won't drink after 30 days?
Very rarely (about 5% of cats), a cat will not adapt to a fountain. Common causes:
- Motor is too loud (>35dB) — try a quieter model
- Water level too high or too low — some cats prefer specific depths
- Location stress — try a different room
- Underlying dental or oral pain making drinking uncomfortable
