Why senior cats need extra attention

By age 8, roughly 30% of cats show early Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) markers. By age 15, over 80%.

Hydration becomes not just wellness — but active management of a progressing condition. The good news: proactive hydration slows CKD progression significantly.

Signs to watch (in addition to general dehydration signs)

  • Increased urination — paradoxically, damaged kidneys can't concentrate urine
  • Increased thirst — compensating for water loss
  • Weight loss — kidney disease affects appetite and nutrient absorption
  • Bad breath with ammonia smell — urea buildup in blood
  • Vomiting episodes — uremia symptom

Protocol for senior cats

Increase fountain water changes to every 2-3 days. Senior cats are more sensitive to slight taste changes.

Add wet food. Even a spoonful daily adds 60-80ml water intake. Look for renal-formulated wet foods with lower phosphorus.

Consider fountains in multiple rooms. Reduces travel effort for arthritic cats. Old cats often stop drinking simply because getting to the water is hard.

Track intake weekly. Mark fountain water level, note how much drops. Sudden decrease = vet visit trigger.

Consult vet quarterly. Blood/urine tests catch CKD progression early. Prescription renal diets extend life expectancy significantly.

When to escalate

Call vet immediately if:

  • Cat stops drinking entirely for 24+ hours
  • Vomiting more than once per day for 2+ days
  • Extreme lethargy — no interest in food, movement, interaction
  • Skin tent doesn't return within 3 seconds

Supplements for senior cats

Evidence-supported additions:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) — reduces kidney inflammation
  • Renal-support blends with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (vet-prescribed only)
  • B-complex vitamins — often lost in urine of CKD cats

Avoid: high-protein "senior formula" foods that stress kidneys.
